Kochi: It is indicated that a group led by Malayalam film director Aashiq Abu has begun efforts to persuade more prominent individuals to resign from FEFKA (Film Employees' Federation of Kerala). The group is also reaching out to senior directors. It is known that some who oppose FEFKA General Secretary B Unnikrishnan's stance are moving towards resignation.
Apparently, only Aashiq Abu has come forward against Unnikrishnan by quitting FEFKA. None of the representatives of the new generation in Malayalam cinema who are part of FEFKA have made any public response yet. Amal Neerad, Anwar Rasheed, Dileesh Pothan, Shyam Pushkaran, Dileesh Nair, and others remain silent. Sources close to FEFKA’s official leadership claim that these directors have distanced themselves from Aashiq Abu and that he does not have the support of a single person.
Aashiq is positioning director Vinayan at the forefront of his campaign. It is reported that Aashiq's aim is to form a new organisation under Vinayan's leadership after pulling more people from FEFKA.
Vinayan has not yet expressed his views on the matter. However, he has sent a letter to the Chief Minister demanding that Unnikrishnan be removed from the government's film policy formulation committee.
Meanwhile, the FEFKA directors’ union informed that Aashiq’s resignation came while the executive committee was discussing the renewal of his membership. FEFKA officials also stated in a press release that it was unusual for Aashiq, who has been in arrears with membership dues for years, to announce his resignation after applying for membership renewal.
