Selena Gomez opens up about quitting nicotine vaping, saying the habit changed her voice

Selena Gomez has spoken candidly about her past nicotine vaping habit, revealing that she believes it has permanently affected her voice. The singer and actor also shared that quitting nicotine has been difficult, using her experience to warn fans against taking up the habit.
In a video posted on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, October 18, she admitted to vaping frequently and explained why she wanted to speak about it publicly.
“Everyone knows – that's somewhat vaped – nicotine is so hard to quit,” she said. “And I think I just wanted to say, if you're going through it, or if you are even trying to vape, it's just not worth it.”
Selena Gomez also addressed the changes in her voice, saying, “And it's changed my voice.” She added that she understood if some listeners were unhappy with how she sounded, telling them they could simply stop listening.
Her remarks came after fans had previously asked her about changes in her voice. During an Instagram Live session in December 2025, Gomez had said that her throat sometimes swelled internally. She did not mention vaping as the reason at the time. In her latest comments, however, she linked her past nicotine use to the change she has noticed.
While Gomez acknowledged that her voice might not return to how it sounded before, she said she was pleased to have quit vaping and hoped to maintain that decision.
“But I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope we can keep it up. It's really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks,” she said.
Her message highlighted the difficulty of overcoming nicotine dependence while encouraging others facing similar struggles not to give up.
Selena Gomez has been open about her health
Gomez has spoken publicly about several health challenges over the years. She was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune condition, and underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. She has also discussed her bipolar disorder diagnosis and mental health journey in interviews and in the 2022 documentary ‘Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me’.
Although Gomez has attributed the change in her voice to nicotine use, she has not shared a medical assessment confirming the specific cause or whether the effects are permanent.
