Mumbai: Noted Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar has passed away in Mumbai following a brief illness, his family confirmed on Thursday. He was 80 years old.

Pandit Karekar passed away on Wednesday night at his residence in the Shivaji Park area of Mumbai. His family released a statement confirming the news.

Born in Goa, Pandit Karekar was widely recognised for his exceptional renditions of traditional compositions like "Bolava Vithal Pahava Vithal" and "Vakratund Mahakay." He earned respect for both his vocal talent and his skills as a teacher. Karekar was also a graded artist with All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, two prominent media platforms.

Influences, training

Karekar honed his craft under the guidance of prominent masters, including Pandit Suresh Haldankar, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, and Pandit CR Vyas. His extensive training contributed significantly to his success and recognition in the world of classical music.

Throughout his career, Karekar received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Tansen Samman, the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, and the Gomant Vibhushan award, further cementing his status in the Indian classical music community.

Karekar also explored fusion music, collaborating with international artists such as Ornette Coleman and Sultan Khan, demonstrating his versatility and global appeal.

Pandit Karekar is survived by three sons.
