The frenzy surrounding British rock band Coldplay’s upcoming ‘Music of the Sphere’s 2025 concert in Mumbai took a dramatic turn when fans found themselves shut out of official ticket sales, only to discover tickets being resold at astronomical prices on unauthorized platforms. After tickets for the Coldplay’s much-anticipated return to India sold out within minutes on BookMyShow, fans have turned to resale sites like Viagogo and social media, where tickets are now being offered for as much as Rs 12 lakh, sparking outrage and disappointment.
Coldplay's India tour, set for January 18 and 19, 2025, at Mumbai’s DY Patil Sports Stadium, marks the band’s first return to the country since their 2016 performance. The overwhelming demand prompted Coldplay to add a third show on January 21, but even that was insufficient to satisfy the massive fanbase. Tickets initially priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 35,000 were snapped up almost instantly, leaving millions of hopeful fans stuck in virtual queues.
On social media platform X, formerly Twitter, hashtags such as #Coldplay, #BookMyShow, and #Crashed quickly began trending as frustrated fans shared screenshots of frozen screens and prolonged wait times. Despite BookMyShow’s acknowledgment of the "heavy traffic" and waitlist numbers exceeding 9 lakh, many were unable to secure tickets.
What is ticket scalping?
Ticket scalping refers to the practice of buying event tickets in bulk with the intent to resell them at significantly inflated prices. This unethical practice thrives when demand for tickets far exceeds supply, as seen with Coldplay's upcoming 2025 Mumbai concert. Scalpers exploit the desperation of fans by listing tickets on platforms like Viagogo and social media for exorbitant prices, often many times the original value. The inflated prices not only frustrate genuine fans but also fuel a black-market economy that takes advantage of high-demand events.
Skyrocketed prices
As tickets disappeared from BookMyShow, resale platforms like Viagogo saw an opportunity, listing tickets for Coldplay’s concerts at exorbitant prices. Viagogo and other sellers advertised tickets for as high as Rs 12 lakh, a staggering 234x markup on original prices. Floor tickets, originally priced at Rs 6,450, are now being sold for over Rs 50,000, while lounge tickets, initially listed at Rs 35,000, have shot up to Rs 12 lakh each.
Additionally, some sellers on Viagogo offered Level 1 tickets, initially priced at Rs 4,500, for an outrageous Rs 10.5 lakh. This black-market scalping practice has left fans enraged, calling for strict action against resellers. "Anyone reselling Coldplay tickets at inflated prices should have their tickets canceled," one user urged on social media.
Reseller websites face fan backlash
Viagogo, a multinational ticket reseller, has faced backlash from Indian fans who accuse it of capitalizing on their desperation to attend the concert. Many have also questioned whether there is a link between Viagogo and BookMyShow, with some users pointing out that Viagogo appears as the first sponsored link when searching for "Coldplay tickets."
In addition to Viagogo, other resellers like Gigsberg have jumped into the fray, listing tickets priced in euros, with prices reaching up to Rs 63,000. Fans across India have voiced their frustrations on X, with some even accusing individuals of purchasing tickets solely to resell them at inflated prices.
BookMyShow responded by issuing a warning on Instagram, cautioning fans against buying tickets from unauthorized platforms. They emphasized that their platform is the only official outlet for Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ World Tour tickets in India. "Protect yourself from ticket scams!" read the post, reminding fans of the dangers of purchasing tickets from black-market resellers.
How you can still get tickets to Coldplay?
For fans still eager to secure tickets to Coldplay's 'Music of the Spheres' World Tour at an affordable price, the band is giving out Infinity Tickets. These tickets are released for each show to ensure accessibility, priced at Rs 2000. Available only in pairs, the tickets are limited to two per buyer, with both seats located next to each other.
The catch is that the exact location of the seats will remain a mystery until fans pick up their tickets at the box office on the day of the concert. These seats can be anywhere in the venue, from the floor to the upper levels, side views, or even some of the best spots in the house.
Call for action
The issue of ticket scalping isn’t new, but the Coldplay concert has brought it to the forefront of public attention in India. Many fans have called for tighter regulations and stronger enforcement to prevent resellers from exploiting diehard fans.
As more resellers take advantage of fans’ eagerness, calls for a ban on ticket reselling are growing louder. Some users have even suggested that Coldplay and BookMyShow cancel tickets purchased for resale, ensuring genuine fans get their hands on them instead.
For now, Coldplay fans who missed out on tickets are left navigating the resale market, where prices continue to soar. Despite the frustrations, many are still willing to pay inflated prices for the chance to see their favorite band live.
