Pop star Katy Perry is ready to live out a dream 15 years in the making as she prepares to lift off into space alongside an all-female crew aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft. In a mission already making headlines for its historic significance, the chart-topping singer is combining star power with space ambition—joined by five other trailblazing women she proudly refers to as her “astronaut girlfriends.”

The mission, scheduled for Monday, 14 April 2025, will see the all-women “Taking Up Space” crew launch aboard NS-31, Blue Origin’s eleventh crewed suborbital spaceflight. The launch is set to take place at 7 am CT (1:30 pm GMT / 7 pm IST) from Blue Origin’s private facility in West Texas.

A personal dream come true

Ahead of liftoff, Perry gave fans a sneak peek inside her space capsule via Instagram, offering an exclusive tour while dressed in her official blue flight suit emblazoned with her last name, “Perry.” Introducing herself with enthusiasm, the pop icon revealed her call name for the mission—"Feather-2."

In her video, Perry beams with excitement while showing off the capsule and her designated seat, number two. Playfully singing “here on the new shepard,” she showcases the spacecraft they’ve been training in for days. “I think I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna sing in a little bit, I got to sing in space,” she declared, teasing what could become the first live serenade in suborbital space.

“I’ve dreamt of going to space for 15 years and tomorrow that dream becomes a reality,” Perry wrote in her caption.

Meet the all-female “Taking Up Space” crew

Joining Perry on this historic journey are Lauren Sánchez, media personality and partner of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos; Gayle King, veteran journalist and broadcaster; Kerianne Flynn, award-winning film producer; Aisha Bowe, former NASA aerospace engineer; and Amanda Nguyen, a civil rights activist and founder of a campaign group for survivors of sexual violence.

“The Taking Up Space Crew launches tomorrow morning at 7am CT and I am SO honoured to be alongside 5 other incredible and inspiring women as we become the first ever all female flight space crew!” Perry wrote.

Together, the six women will become the first all-female crew to fly to space since Valentina Tereshkova's solo mission in 1963, marking a milestone in space history and gender representation.

A short flight, a big leap

While the flight itself will last approximately 11 minutes, it promises to offer an experience of a lifetime. The New Shepard spacecraft is designed to ascend more than 100 kilometres above Earth, crossing the Kármán line, widely considered the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.

After a vertical launch, the booster and capsule will separate, with the crew inside the capsule enjoying a few minutes of weightlessness. During this phase, the crew will float freely and gaze upon Earth through the capsule’s large panoramic windows.

The capsule will then descend gently back to Earth, slowed by parachutes and retro rockets, landing safely in the Texas desert. The fully automated flight, with no pilots onboard, is designed for both safety and comfort.

Blue Origin’s continuing space tourism push

Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has been at the forefront of commercial space tourism since its first crewed flight in July 2021. Named after Alan Shepard, the first American astronaut in space, the New Shepard rocket has now flown 10 previous human missions, offering civilians and celebrities a short but exhilarating trip beyond Earth.

As Perry put it herself, “I do believe this. Believing your dreams is how you make them come true.”
