Thiruvananthapuram: The two-day Kerala Film Policy Conclave held in the state capital concluded with a strong resolve to elevate the Malayalam film industry to international standards by ensuring job security, gender equality and women’s safety.

Actress Revathi, addressing the gathering, emphasised that the conclave marked a huge step forward for Malayalam cinema. “The real test lies in how effectively these policies are implemented,” she remarked

Key issues in the film industry, including those raised by the women film workers

Key issues raised included working hours, fair remuneration, internal grievance redressal mechanisms, and the overall safety of women in the workplace.

Several positive suggestions came up from minister Saji Cherian. The government will take steps by understanding the essence to make a comprehensive film policy, said Revathi, referring to the minister’s remarks.

WCC’s stance

Earlier, the WCC (Women in Collective Cinema) had submitted detailed recommendations to the policy formulation committee and the government. Their stance and active involvement were acknowledged in a positive way for the policy-making process. Moving forward without addressing the issues is not possible.

About the conclave

The conclave also touched upon lesser-discussed but important subjects such as archiving, documentation, and the need to raise awareness about the POSH Act (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace). “Many people are still unaware of internal grievance committees and their rights. Some are afraid to speak out. But what’s there to fear? ” Revathi emphasised.

Adoor’s speech

“I had to leave early for Chennai and couldn’t hear his remarks. So I wouldn’t want to comment without knowing what was said,” Revathi added. Awareness is key for every one.
