Institution-builders should emulate mothers: corporate guru R Gopalakrishnan
Kozkikode: Entrepreneurs who embark on building institutions should endeavour to emulate mothers, said R Gopalakrishnan, former Executive Director of Tata Sons. He was delivering the inaugural address on the occasion of the 23rd Annual Management Convention of the Calicut Management Association at The Gateway Hotel Beach Road.
While a start-up is incubated for a ten-year period, no mother parents her child for just a decade. Nor does she nurture them expecting any gain in return. Institution-building requires patient commitment. Only those who are individually devoted to such a project can pull it off. Constructively critical analysis is an imperative. One should also have the ability and patience to tackle problems both in the short and long terms, the former Vice Chairman of Hindustan Unilever Ltd., added.
Three of R Gopalakrishnan’s titles in the ‘Shapers of Business Institutions’ series on the strategies, which propelled the runaway success of companies whose founders are still living, were released. A distinctive feature of this creative enterprise is that it is probably for the first time in Indian publishing history that a corporate chief has teamed with an academic on such a venture.
While the chief guest E S Ranganathan, Managing Director, Indraprastha Gas Ltd released “How Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw ‘Fermented’ Biocon,” Dr. Omkumar Krishnan, Associate Professor-Marketing Management, IIM-K, released “How TCS Built an Industry for India.” The founder-President of CMA, Dr. V K S Menon did the honours for “How Anil Naik Built L&T’s Remarkable Growth Trajectory.” The co-authors of the Rupa imprints are Sushmita Srivastava, Tulsi Jayakumar and Pallavi Mody, all attached to SPJIMR, Mumbai. The author signed away copies made available by Mathrubhumi Books.
Recipients of the CMA awards in various categories include Woman Entrepreneur Award to Anju A, Co-founder & CEO of Cybaze Technologies Pvt. Ltd.; Young Entrepreneur Award to Faijas Manalody of Kozhikodens; Namitha Prem of Phototec, Kozhikode – Young Manager Award, CMA-C K Prahalad Award for Industrial Excellence to Peekay Group and A Pradeepkumar, MLA the Management Leadership Award.
