New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, urged people on Sunday to visit Wayanad and enjoy its beauty to help revive tourism, rebuild livelihoods, and restore the area's vibrancy.

He highlighted that while the recent landslide tragedy primarily affected the Mundakkai area, there is a misconception that all of Wayanad has been impacted, leading to a massive decline in tourist visits.

"Wayanad's beauty is undisputed, but it is the compassion and kindness of its people that has always drawn me to it. Today, so many of those people who rely on tourism for their livelihood are looking to you all for help," the former Congress chief said in a Facebook post.

"Let me assure you, Wayanad is still vibrant and welcoming, with its spirit unbroken. I urge you to visit and experience its beauty, helping to revive tourism, rebuild livelihoods, and restore its vibrancy," he said.

Earlier this month, Rahul Gandhi emphasised the need for a united effort to revitalise tourism in Wayanad and to counter the idea that it is a "dangerous" place following the landslides. He made these remarks during a virtual meeting with Kerala Congress leaders and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The recent disaster claimed the lives of over 200 people and marked one of the worst tragedies in Kerala, a region known for its fragile ecology along coastal and hilly areas.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi won from two constituencies but chose to resign from his Wayanad seat, which his sister Priyanka Gandhi plans to contest in a bypoll.
