Thalakkulathur (Kozhikode): Similar to Kadamakkudy and Kumbalangi, Narayanan chira in Kozhikode district is quietly carving a niche as a scenic tourism destination.

At the very hint of a breeze through the paddy fields of Pavayil, visitors are welcomed by the breathtaking beauty of Narayanan chira, a serene freshwater reservoir that spreads across more than 40 acres beside the Akalapuzha River.

One side of the chira (pond) is equipped with pedal boats and a small jetty to facilitate water activities. On the opposite side, across the road that cuts through the chira, traditional Kotta Vanchi, also known as coracle or bowl boats, await. Visitors often indulge in fishing experiences here.

The surroundings are fast developing into a leisure haven. A private resort and a fish farming centre are already functioning near the Chira. With tourism possibilities, the Thalakkulathur Panchayat has launched a special initiative named 'Matsya Samrudhi', aimed at boosting the local economy while promoting sustainable fishery-based tourism.

Panchayat President K.T. Prameela stated that a new facility will soon allow visitors to cook and enjoy the fish they catch right on the spot. More boat jetties are under construction, and a beautifully laid walkway with ornamental lighting is also in the pipeline.

Though still growing as a destination, Narayanan chira possesses a quiet magic that leaves visitors wanting to return. The visual harmony of Akalapuzha merging with Narayanan chira, along with a coastal road running beside them, creates an unforgettable landscape.

A little further along the coastal road lies Parakkal Thazham, the scenic confluence where Narayananchira and Akalapuzha meet. The bund dividing the waterbodies forms a unique natural fork, with the chira on one side and the river on the other, truly a confluence of beauty.

Parakkal Thazham also houses a Panchayat-owned boat jetty from where visitors can embark on peaceful boat rides to Oloppara or the backwaters of Thikkodi-Purakkad. With prior notice, fresh catches of fresh karimeen (pearl spot fish) can also be arranged for purchase.

During rainy days, the route from Paavayil to Akalapuzha becomes even more enchanting, offering a sensory experience of Kerala’s monsoon magic.
