The Tourism Department is reintroducing Caravan Tourism in Kerala, a unique travel concept that has been in the works for some time.
To support this initiative, a caravan park is being set up in Ponmudi, a popular hill station in Thiruvananthapuram. The park will be located near the Resthouse in Ponmudi Upper Hill, with construction expected to begin soon. Approval for the project is anticipated by the end of next month.
After the success of houseboat tourism, the Caravan Kerala project marks a new possibility for tourism in this area.
A home on wheels
Tourists will be able to park their caravans in the designated park, relax, and even stay overnight without the need for a hotel. These mobile homes can be taken to nearby villages, allowing travellers the freedom to explore different attractions as they wish.
The project, first announced by Minister Mohammad Riyas in 2021, faced delays due to various challenges.

Titled "Keravan Kerala," the flagship tourism project launched by Kerala Tourism in 2021 struggled to gain traction as anticipated due to a shortage of sufficient caravan parks in both the public and private sectors.
However, a space has now been identified to accommodate up to five caravans, and a modern park with all necessary facilities is being planned. Over 13 private caravan operators have shown interest in the project. These tourism caravans will be fully equipped with amenities, including a sofa-bed, fridge, microwave, dining table, toilet, air conditioning, internet, and audio-video systems, ensuring a convenient and pleasant stay for travellers.
Safety and comfort in nature
The park will be designed to provide a safe and nature-friendly experience for visitors. There will be security staff, a snack bar, toilets, and charging stations for the caravans.
In addition to Ponmudi, the Caravan project is also set to launch in other locations such as Bolgatty Palace in Kochi and Bekal in Kasaragod.
