Kollam: In an effort to curb plastic pollution, the Kerala government will soon enforce stricter regulations in tourist destinations across the state's hilly regions by setting up green checkpoints.
The green checkpoints will be established in collaboration with the Local Self-Government Department, Police, Motor Vehicles Department, Forest Department, Tourism Department, and the Responsible Tourism Mission. The decision was taken during a meeting of officials from various government departments and local governing bodies.
As part of the initiative, traders will be directed to provide drinking water in reusable glass or steel bottles instead of plastic ones. The government has also recommended the sale of compostable water bottles that can be disposed of through biodegradable methods. The move comes after the High Court sought an explanation from the government regarding plastic pollution in these areas.
A refundable fee system will be introduced for plastic bottles and other plastic items, encouraging visitors to return them to designated collection centers to prevent littering. Additionally, strict waste management rules will be enforced, ensuring proper segregation and disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in these ecologically sensitive areas.
LSG Dept. Secretary T.V. Anupama stated that the government is examining plastic ban models implemented in other states. Event organizers will also be instructed to serve drinking water in glasses instead of plastic bottles at public gatherings.
In a further move to control pollution, a refundable deposit may be collected from catering businesses and banquet halls. Restaurants and commercial establishments will be prohibited from releasing wastewater into open drains, with strict mandates for waste collection and disposal.
Locally formed committees will conduct surprise inspections at eateries and commercial spaces to ensure compliance. However, unlike some states that have imposed plastic bans in hill tourism zones, the Kerala government does not plan to introduce a "Green Cess" as part of this initiative.
