Kodenchery (Kozhikode): As the monsoon breathes life into the lush rivers of the high ranges, the hills of Malabar come alive with the adrenaline rush of white water kayaking. The International White Water Kayaking Championship, a flagship event of the Malabar River Festival, will kick off on Friday with thrilling competitions set in the scenic rivers of Chalipuzha and Iruvanjippuzha in Kodenchery panchayat.
Over a hundred athletes, including participants from more than ten foreign countries, are expected to take part in this much-anticipated championship. Final preparations are in full swing.
Organised by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, the championship is being conducted with the active support of the Department of Tourism, Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council, Kozhikode District Panchayat, and the panchayats of Chakkittapara, Kodenchery, and Thiruvambady, along with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association(IKCA).
The event will begin on Friday at Pulikkayam, Chalipuzha, with the Intermediate Category ‘Extreme Slalom’ races for both men and women, including their finals on the same day. On Saturday, professional-level ‘Extreme Slalom’ competitions will take center stage.
Sunday will feature the exhilarating ‘Down River’ races at Iruvanjippuzha near Pullurampara. The fastest male and female kayakers in this category will be honoured with the titles of ‘Veagaraaja’ (Speed King) and ‘Veagaraani’ (Speed Queen).
The championship will conclude with a public ceremony on Sunday evening, where Minister for Tourism and Public Works, Mohammed Riyas, will inaugurate the function and distribute the prizes.
