India's largest airline, IndiGo has introduced a new budget-friendly fare category called 'IndiGo Lite', for travellers who prefer flying with only cabin baggage. The new fare became available for booking on July 1, 2026, and will be valid for travel from July 15, 2026 onwards.

The move comes as airlines increasingly unbundle services, allowing passengers to pay only for the amenities they use while keeping base fares lower. It also follows a similar initiative by Air India, which recently introduced a basic economy fare without complimentary meals for budget-conscious travellers.

What is IndiGo Lite?

Designed exclusively for Economy Class passengers travelling light, IndiGo Lite offers a lower base fare and includes:

  • One cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg
  • One personal item, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack
  • An auto-assigned seat at no additional cost

The fare does not include complimentary check-in baggage, but passengers can purchase additional services including checked baggage, preferred seats, meals, and priority services like Fast Forward, up to one hour before departure.

Bookings for IndiGo Lite can only be made through the airline's official website, mobile app, and contact centre. The fare is available across both domestic and international flights.

Loyalty benefits remain

Despite being the airline's entry-level fare, IndiGo Lite passengers will continue to earn and redeem IndiGo BluChip loyalty points, ensuring they don't lose access to the airline's rewards programme.

IndiGo expands its fare portfolio

Commenting on the launch, Aloke Singh, Chief Strategy Officer at IndiGo, said the airline is continuing to adapt its offerings to suit the changing needs of different customer segments.

"Designed for customers who travel light and would like to pay only for the services they need, IndiGo Lite is another step towards building a strong, fit-for-purpose product portfolio."

The new fare joins IndiGo's existing 6E Ways to Fly options, which include Saver, Flexi Plus, IndiGo UpFront, IndiGoStretch, and Stretch+, giving passengers more flexibility based on their budget and travel preferences.

Why airlines are introducing stripped-down fares

The introduction of IndiGo Lite comes as Indian airlines continue to face mounting financial pressure. Rising jet fuel prices, geopolitical tensions including the Iran conflict, have increased operating costs, while airspace restrictions and intense competition have further squeezed airline margins.

By separating optional services from the ticket price, airlines are attempting to keep fares competitive while giving passengers greater control over what they pay for.

IndiGo currently operates more than 2,100 daily flights, serving over 95 domestic and 40 international destinations, making it India's largest carrier by market share.
