Peptide parties are becoming a new wellness trend in India. Here's what peptides are, how peptide mocktails work, why celebrities are talking about them, their uses, risks and what science says

The latest wellness party trend does not involve champagne, cocktails or mocktails, it involves peptides.
Peptides have quietly become one of the biggest buzzwords in the beauty, fitness and longevity world. They are being discussed for everything from weight loss and muscle recovery to glowing skin and living longer. Now, the trend has reached India.
A “Peptide Party” in Bengaluru, scheduled for August 29, was billed as an invite-only gathering with music, food, networking and “peptide tastings”. It was cancelled after the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration sought details about the preparations, including their composition, source, manufacturers, dosage, intended use and regulatory status.
The cancellation has raised an obvious question: what exactly is a peptide party?
Peptides have been around for years. They are short chains of amino acids and occur naturally in the body. Some act as chemical messengers, helping regulate processes such as metabolism, hormones and tissue function.
Medicine has used peptide-based treatments for decades. Insulin, for instance, is a peptide hormone. More recently, drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have made peptide-based medicines household names because of their use in diabetes and obesity treatment.
The problem is that the word peptide now covers a huge range of things, from established medicines to experimental compounds sold online. And they are definitely not all the same.
So what happens at a peptide party?
The idea comes largely from the biohacking and longevity community, where people gather to discuss ways of optimising their bodies, from sleep and nutrition to supplements and experimental treatments.
The Bengaluru event was promoted as a social evening rather than a medical conference, with food, music, games, networking and ‘peptide tastings’. The organisers later said they did not intend to administer injectable or prescription substances.
The phrase “peptide mocktail”, however, is where things become complicated.
A peptide cannot simply be treated like a vitamin powder that you mix into a drink and expect the same effect. Many peptides are broken down by digestive enzymes and have difficulty crossing the intestinal wall. This is why many peptide medicines require injections or specially designed formulations. Some peptides can be formulated for oral use, but that requires pharmaceutical technology to protect the molecule and help the body absorb it.
“If we talk about peptides, some of them are perfectly reasonable to ingest, such as dietary or collagen peptides. But we can’t assume that the peptides being marketed on social media are safe for us to take, whether as a drink or in any other form, especially when they are designed or developed for ingestion or are unapproved research peptides.These peptides can sometimes encounter barriers that affect their stability, such as poor cellular membrane permeability in the gastrointestinal tract, enzymatic degradation and first-pass hepatic metabolism,” said Muskan Pandey, a Research Scholar at University of Lucknow
“When we ingest a peptide, the stomach and intestinal enzymes break down most peptides into smaller peptides and amino acids. Hence, much of the original peptide becomes smaller peptides and amino acids rather than remaining as an intact, biologically active peptide.
If the peptides are injected into our body, they are deposited beneath the skin rather than being exposed to the gastrointestinal tract. By bypassing the digestive system and entering the bloodstream, these peptides can act on their target, potentially leading to side effects such as allergic reactions, nausea, dizziness, and others,” Muskan added.
Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with them?
Part of the answer is Hollywood. Jennifer Aniston made headlines after telling The Wall Street Journal that she uses weekly peptide injections and saying she believes peptides are “the future” of skincare.
Other celebrities have also talked publicly about peptides, longevity treatments and related wellness routines. That has helped turn what was once a specialist subject into something people encounter while scrolling through Instagram or watching celebrity interviews. But celebrity enthusiasm is not clinical evidence.
There is also the influence of people such as Bryan Johnson, whose highly publicised longevity routine has made biological-age testing, optimisation and experimental wellness interventions part of mainstream conversation. The appeal is understandable. Who wouldn't be intrigued by something promising better skin, quicker recovery, weight control or a healthier old age?
Where are peptides actually used?
There are legitimate medical and cosmetic uses. Peptide-based medicines are used for conditions including diabetes and obesity, while research is continuing into other therapeutic applications.
Peptides are also common in skincare. They are used in creams and serums because some can influence pathways involved in collagen and skin repair.
A 2026 meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials found that certain oral and topical peptide formulations produced improvements in measures such as skin hydration and brightness, although effects on wrinkles were more modest.
Then there is the experimental side of the market.
Compounds such as BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin are frequently promoted online for recovery, muscle building, fat loss or anti-ageing. But the evidence varies considerably, and several are not approved for these uses.
A 2026 review of therapeutic peptides and healthy ageing found promising areas of research but also highlighted major gaps in long-term safety and clinical evidence for several non-approved compounds.
“The medically approved peptide drugs have undergone clinical trials and are regulated for specific doses, routes of administration, effects and risks. They are also subject to standards for manufacturing and approved labelling. Whereas the peptides being promoted by biohackers and wellness clinics may be experimental or unapproved, with limited human evidence. Labels such as ‘anti-ageing’, ‘fat loss’, ‘healing’ or ‘muscle recovery’ may go beyond what clinical studies actually support. The FDA specifically flags the limited information available for some of these kinds of peptides,” she said.
The risks are not just about side effects
The biggest problem with unapproved peptide products may be knowing what you are actually getting.
An online vial labelled “research peptide” may not have the same quality controls as an approved medicine. Questions around purity, contamination, dosage, sterility and immune reactions become particularly important when products are injected.
There is also the increasingly popular practice of “peptide stacking”, where several compounds are taken together. There is not enough robust evidence to establish that combining multiple experimental peptides is safe or effective. And that is why doctors are likely to be much less impressed by a celebrity testimonial than by a properly conducted clinical trial.
“As these peptides are involved in regulating metabolism and hormone levels in the body, they can also affect blood sugar levels. Hence, if a peptide is unapproved by the FDA and has not been clinically tested and verified for human use, it should not be ingested or injected into the human body. Taking such peptides may lead to heart-related effects, severe allergic or immune reactions, and problems with liver or kidney function, among other potential risks,” Muskan added.
Are peptides the future of longevity?
Possibly some of them. But we are not there yet. Scientists are genuinely investigating peptides for metabolism, tissue repair, inflammation and other processes associated with ageing. That is very different from proving that a particular peptide can make healthy people live longer.
The longevity industry often moves faster than science.
A molecule can show an interesting result in cells or animals, become popular among biohackers and appear on social media long before there is enough human evidence to recommend it routinely. That does not make the research useless. It simply means promising is not the same as proven.
