The moment triggered massive online buzz, with search trends, memes and retail demand for the candy surging sharply

A simple chocolate toffee has suddenly found itself at the centre of global attention after an unexpected diplomatic moment between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. What started as a light exchange during an official visit has now turned into a full-blown internet trend, with search interest, memes and even online sales of the candy shooting up dramatically.
The toffee in question is Melody, a chocolate toffee manufactured by Indian FMCG brand Parle. Once a familiar pocket snack, it is now trending across social media platforms and search engines, thanks to a viral video that sparked widespread curiosity and humour online.
The buzz began when Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a packet of Melody to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a high-level diplomatic meeting.
In the video that quickly went viral, Meloni is seen smiling as she receives the gift and saying, “PM Modi brought us a gift. It is Melody,” while holding the toffee packet.
She later captioned the post, “Thank you for the gift,” which further amplified the online attention around the interaction.
The light-hearted exchange between the two leaders quickly became a talking point, with social media users coining the nickname “Melodi” and flooding timelines with memes and reactions.
Google searches explode overnight
Following the viral moment, online interest in Melody toffee surged sharply.
According to Google Trends data, searches for “melody chocolate” rose by 1200 percent. Searches for “parle melody” increased by 4750 percent. Searches for “melody toffee” jumped by 950 percent.
What was once a simple toffee suddenly became one of the most searched food-related terms online within hours.
Retail platforms see instant demand spike
The viral attention did not stay limited to search engines.
Quick commerce platform Blinkit also reported a sudden spike in demand for the product shortly after the video surfaced online.
The company said it began seeing a rapid rise in searches for Melody on its app as users rushed to look for the toffee.
On social media, Blinkit acknowledged the trend, noting that the “Melody” search surge was directly linked to the viral diplomatic moment and the memes circulating online.
Stock runs and price buzz online
The sudden demand also had an immediate impact on availability.
Reports suggested that ₹100 Melody candy packets went out of stock on some platforms during the peak of the trend-driven rush, while ₹50 packs remained available in certain listings.
The moment between Modi and Meloni quickly moved beyond formal diplomacy and entered internet culture.
Social media users began sharing jokes, edits and memes around the “Melodi” moment, turning a diplomatic exchange into a light-hearted digital trend.
Many users even predicted the surge early, joking that “Melody stocks are going to rise” as soon as the video appeared online.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with Giorgia Meloni took place during his visit to Rome as part of the final leg of his five-nation tour.
He travelled to Italy at the invitation of the Italian Prime Minister, with both leaders engaging in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
India and Italy are currently working under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which focuses on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence, clean energy, innovation and science, technology and cultural exchange.
