A viral video of an elderly man performing Karwa Chauth rituals for former adult film star Mia Khalifa has stirred a heated debate on social media. Shared by a user named Guru Ji on X, known for posting humorous content, the video features the man conducting the traditional puja with a thali and channi, all while gazing at a picture of Khalifa pinned to a wall.
The unusual post has prompted a flood of mixed reactions, ranging from amusement to discomfort.
In the video, the man is seen following the typical Karwa Chauth customs, which include looking through a sieve at the moon before shifting his gaze to Khalifaâs photograph. While some viewers found the act entertaining and funny, others were quick to criticize it, calling the gesture "creepy" and accusing it of being a shallow attempt to attract attention. One viewer commented, âRegrettably, such meaningful celebrations have been reduced to indulgent displays for mere likes and views.â Another remarked, âThis is just something his grandchildren made him do for engagement on social media.â
However, not all reactions were negative. Some users embraced the light-heartedness of the moment, with comments like âThis is funnyâ and âI laughed so hard, hahaha funny.â Still, many found the act bizarre and inappropriate for such a significant cultural festival.
Karwa Chauth, a traditional festival in India where married women fast for the long lives of their husbands, was celebrated on October 20 this year. While primarily observed by married women, the festival has expanded in recent years, with unmarried women and even men participating in the fast for their partners or fiancés. Amid these celebrations, this viral video has drawn significant attention, blurring the line between humor and reverence.
This isnât the first time Mia Khalifa's image has sparked controversy in India. In August, her photo appeared on a hoarding in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, as part of the decorations for the Aadi festival, a celebration dedicated to Goddess Amman (Parvati). The banner, which displayed Khalifa's image alongside those of local deities, caused a public outcry and was later removed by the police after going viral.
