An Indian man recently outsmarted a scammer in an entertaining phone call that has since gone viral, amassing millions of views on Instagram. Shiv Arora, who received a call from a Pakistani number with a police officer’s profile picture, found himself targeted by a fraudster impersonating law enforcement.
The scammer claimed that Arora’s son had been arrested and demanded money for his release, attempting to make the situation seem urgent. “Tell me your son’s name, and I’ll let you speak to him,” the caller said in Hindi.
Arora decided to turn the tables and play along instead of falling for the scam. When the scammer asked for his son's name, Arora humorously replied with his own name, “Shiv.” The scammer persisted, asking where his son was, to which Arora calmly responded, “Moradabad.” The interaction took an even funnier turn when the scammer inquired about his relationship to the boy, and Arora replied, ‘Nani’ (maternal grandmother).
The scammer, not deterred, asked to speak with the boy’s mother. Arora continued by bringing a woman to the phone, claiming “Shiv” had been arrested. The scammer then introduced someone pretending to be Arora’s son, who dramatically began crying, “Mumma, mumma.” This over-the-top performance sent Arora into fits of laughter, ultimately causing the scammer to abruptly hang up.
Sharing the amusing incident on Instagram, Arora warned his followers to be vigilant about such scams. He wrote, “I received a call today from a number originating in Pakistan, with a display picture showing a police officer. They claimed that a loved one had been arrested and demanded money for their release.” He also urged people to avoid giving out personal information or sending money in such situations and recommended reporting any suspicious calls to authorities.
The video quickly went viral and sparked widespread reactions. Many viewers shared similar experiences, highlighting how prevalent these scams have become.
