Sending money to the wrong UPI ID can be stressful. While UPI payments cannot be reversed automatically once completed, there are clear steps you can follow to recover your money.

Understand the limitation

Once you enter your UPI PIN and complete the transaction, the payment is final. There is no instant “undo” option. Recovery depends on quick action, proper reporting, and cooperation from banks and the recipient.

Contact the unintended recipient

If you have access to the recipient’s phone number or UPI ID, then politely inform them about the mistake and request a refund of the amount. Many people return the money voluntarily once they realise the error.

Report the Transaction on Your UPI App

  • Open the UPI app you used for the transfer (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.) and:
  • Go to Transaction History
  • Select the incorrect transaction
  • Choose “Report a problem”, “Help”, or a similar option
  • This creates an official complaint record within the UPI system.
  • Do not rely only on the app. Call or visit your bank and provide:
  • UPI Transaction ID
  • Amount transferred
  • Date and time
  • Recipient’s UPI ID or bank details

Your bank may coordinate with the recipient’s bank to request a reversal. Speed is critical, the sooner you report, the better your chances.

File a Complaint with NPCI

If the issue is not resolved within a few days:

  • Visit the NPCI UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism
  • Choose the transaction type (e.g., Person-to-Person)
  • Select the issue: Incorrect transfer to another account
  • Submit transaction details and follow the escalation timeline

NPCI oversees UPI operations and can intervene if banks delay resolution.

If neither the bank nor NPCI resolves your complaint within the prescribed time:

  • Approach the Banking Ombudsman
  • Submit proof of prior complaints and responses
