Easter, a festival which celebrates the rebirth of Jesus Christ, is a day which brings hope and new beginnings to the devotees. Let’s celebrate this Easter by sharing its happiness, significance and history with the whole world.
What is Easter?
Easter is one of the prominent celebrations in the Christian faith. It marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ—believed to have risen from the dead three days after his crucifixion. This event is at the heart of Christianity, symbolising hope, renewal, and victory over death. Christians all around the world observe Easter with special church visits, prayers, joyful family gatherings, and giving gifts.
History of Easter eggs?
Long before Easter became a Christian holiday, eggs were already seen as symbols of new life and fresh beginnings. Ancient spring festivals often used eggs to celebrate fertility and the earth waking up after winter. One such festival honoured Ēostre, a goddess of fertility, and it's believed her name might have inspired the word “Easter”.
As Christianity spread, people embraced the egg as a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection. During Lent, a period of fasting leading up to Easter, eating eggs was often avoided. So when Easter arrived, eggs became one of the first things people ate to break the fast.
That’s how the tradition of Easter eggs started—and over time, people began colouring them, especially in Eastern Europe. Eventually, chocolate eggs came into the picture, thanks to chocolatiers in France and Germany.
The fun of Easter egg hunts
Easter egg hunts are a playful and exciting part of the holiday, especially for children. As part of this, colourful eggs are hidden in gardens or homes, and kids race around trying to find them. The hunt reflects the joy of discovering something new—just like how Christians celebrate Jesus rising from the tomb.
These days, people get creative with Easter baskets too. Instead of just using chocolate eggs, they might include small toys, storybooks, art supplies, bath bombs, or even little outing tickets. It’s a great way to mix fun with thoughtfulness.
