A viral video teaching people to eat dosa with a fork and spoon has sparked a debate online, with social media users questioning whether a dish traditionally eaten by hand really needs Western-style dining etiquette.
The video, shared by Western Wings Spoken English (@westernwingsspokenenglish), shows an etiquette coach demonstrating what it describes as the “right way” to eat dosa. Instead of using his hands, he uses a fork and spoon to cut the dosa into smaller portions before eating it.
The unusual video has drawn plenty of reactions online, particularly from viewers who believe dosa is best enjoyed the traditional way.
In the video, the man first turns the dosa from both sides. He then uses a spoon and fork to cut it into smaller pieces before eating it with the utensils.
According to the video, using cutlery can make dining more hygienic and allow people to enjoy their food neatly and confidently.
However, the video did not convince everyone.
Sharing the video on X, one user joked about the experience of ordering dosa at a luxury hotel, writing, “When you pay ₹1,500 for a dosa at a 5-star hotel, apparently you are not allowed to eat it with your hands.”
The user added, “Fork and spoon are compulsory! Here is the official training video on how to eat a dosa like a 5-star guest.”
The video quickly became a talking point, with users poking fun at the idea of applying formal dining etiquette to dosa.
One user wrote, “Kabhi-Kabhi 5-Star Rules, Dosa Se Bhi Zyada Expensive Lagte Hain”, joking that five-star rules can sometimes seem more expensive than the dosa itself.
Another simply reacted, “wdym eat dosa with fork.”
A third user argued that Indian and Western foods should be eaten according to their respective traditions, writing, “Eat indian foods in indian way and western foods in western way.” The user also referred to a separate instance involving a London crowd laughing at their own Prime Minister for eating a burger with a fork and spoon.
The demonstration even drew criticism from someone questioning the etiquette being taught. “Someone tell him he has to use knife not spoon. So called etiquette,” the user commented.
