A viral kitchen hack is making it easier than ever to prepare soft, fluffy idlis at home. All you need is a steel plate, a steamer or pressure cooker, and a few basic ingredients.

If you have ever skipped making idlis because you did not own an idli stand, this viral kitchen hack could be the solution.
Social media users are showing how a simple steel plate can replace the traditional idli mould, helping home cooks prepare soft, fluffy idlis with minimal equipment.
The method has become popular among students, first-time cooks and people living away from home, proving that you do not need specialised cookware to enjoy one of South India's favourite breakfast dishes.
Ingredients
- 2 cups fermented idli batter
- 1 teaspoon oil or ghee, for greasing the plate
- Water, for steaming
Step-by-step procedure
- Step 1: Grease a clean stainless steel plate with a thin layer of oil or ghee to prevent the batter from sticking.
- Step 2: Pour the fermented idli batter onto the plate. Spread it evenly to a thickness of about 1 to 1.5 cm.
- Step 3: Add water to a steamer or pressure cooker. If using a pressure cooker, remove the whistle from the lid.
- Step 4: Place the greased plate carefully inside the steamer or cooker. Make sure the plate does not touch the water.
- Step 5: Cover the steamer and cook on medium heat for 12 to 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the batter comes out clean.
- Step 6: Remove the plate and allow the idli to cool for two to three minutes.
- Step 7: Cut the steamed idli into squares, rectangles or wedges using a knife or pizza cutter.
- Step 8: Serve hot with coconut chutney, sambar or podi mixed with ghee.
Although the idlis are not round like the traditional version, social media users say the texture remains just as soft and spongy.
The simple hack has earned praise for making homemade idlis possible without investing in an idli stand, turning an everyday steel plate into an effective alternative.
