Every festive season, some people get busy reinventing Indian craft, and some simply wear it the way it was always meant to be worn. Nita Ambani belongs firmly to the second camp. And on the eighth night of Navratri at Reliance Greens in Jamnagar, she did it again.

The family turned up in full, Mukesh Ambani, Nita, Anant and Radhika, spending the evening with the extended Reliance family. But let’s be honest, the room had one gravitational centre.

Nita chose what looks like a Patola or Bandhani saree, and it was a riot done with discipline. Vivid pink, deep blue, yellow and green sat in bands like a rainbow that had been taught manners, each stripe carrying its own geometric and traditional motifs. Translation: this was not a saree that needed a filter. The multicoloured embroidered blouse, with mirror work, picked up the palette and threw it right back.

Then came the jewellery, and this is where it got properly regal. A statement necklace of pearls and emeralds, emerald danglers, a stack of multicoloured bangles, a neat bun to let it all breathe. Nothing competed. Everything knew its job.

Mukesh Ambani kept it quiet in a white kurta-pyjama with a blue bundi, the silent partner in a very loud colour story.

Radhika Merchant, meanwhile, played the other note beautifully. Her floor-length suit in rich bottle green was heavy with gold-toned embroidery, all bold geometry and stylised florals. The dupatta did the talking: voluminous, reddish-orange, scattered with traditional Rajasthani Bandhani dots. A half updo, understated earrings and an easy smile finished a look that kept one foot in craft and the other in today.

Anant, on stage beside her, went with a vibrant pink kurta.

Later, the formalities gave way to fun. The family wandered the mela, and Anant and Radhika were spotted on the swings with MS Dhoni and Sakshi Dhoni, because even the grandest Navratri eventually becomes a fair.

In a season where every other outfit is chasing a trend, this one went back to the loom, the dye pot and the dot. And that, really, is the flex.
