As the country immersed itself in Diwali celebrations in November, Kakkathuruthu, a quaint little island on the Vembanad Lake, was gearing up for ‘Kathoos’, a flagship village tourism project spearheaded by the tourism department in collaboration with the local panchayat.
Known for its iconic sunsets and canoe boat rides through the stunning backwaters, the picturesque scenery across the seemingly small village of Kakkathathuru has already received global recognition through National Geographic travel magazine. With the inception of this new project, Kakkathuruthu has expanded its facilities including kayaking, shikara boat rides, as well as fishing in the backwaters. ‘Kathoos’ project has been offering a lot of promise with an enhanced tourist experience and better employment opportunities for the locals.
Lunch arrangements for 50
Live food prepared in the traditional Kerala style including delicacies such as puttu, appam and the classic 'karimeen pollichathu' (pearl spot fish fry) has been made available here. Interestingly, the tourists can dine alongside the backwaters.

Visiting time is between 11:30 am and 6:30 pm. Visitors can also indulge in a two-hour boat ride in the evening to watch the magical sunset across the backwaters while enjoying a glass of the local tender coconut water.
Pedal boating facility on cards
With three kayaks already in operation, pedal boats are also expected to be launched soon in the village ahead of the Kakkathuruthu tourism festival in December. Moreover, nature walks across this traveller’s paradise are an exhilarating experience.
