Crystal clear Umngot river in Meghalaya woos tourists

Umngot river also known as Dawki flows near the India- Bangladesh border of Meghalaya. It is located 75 kms away from Shillong. The river is considered to be the cleanest river in Asia.

Dawki river flows through the cleanest village of Asia, Mawlynnong situated near the border between India and Bangladesh. It passes the valleys between Jaintia and Khasi hills of Meghalaya to reach Bangladesh.

Each year several tourists reach Mawlynnong to visit Umngot. The pictures they share on social media usually go viral.

Due to the crystal clear water, it feels like the boats are flying over water, share the travellers on social media. They also share their experience of seeing everything under water including the rocks and fish so easily with the naked eyes. The natives say that the bottom of the water will become more visible on sunny days.

The months of November and April are more suitable for visiting Umngot river. During monsoon, the river will flood which makes travel difficult. Boating is the major attraction for tourists in Umngot river.

Mawlynnong is also known as ‘God’s own Garden’. In 2013, Discover India selected this place as the cleanest village in Asia. 100 percent literacy rate is another remarkable achievement of this village.
