The Dawki River flows along the India-Bangladesh border. It is situated 75 km away from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. Popularly known as the Dawki, the Umngot River is undisputedly the cleanest river in Asia. The river passes through the village of Mawlynnong, which has been named Asia's cleanest village. The Umngot River flows into Bangladesh through the Jaintia and the Khasi ranges.

Several tourists visit the Umngot River in Mawlynnong village, and the pictures they share on social media often turn out to be hot topics for discussion. Due to the crystal-clear water, the shadows of the boat fall on the bottom of the river, creating a feeling of floating through the air.

People can see the rocks, pebbles, and fish at the bottom of the river. Locals also say that they can see more depths on sunny days.

The best time to visit the Umngot River is from November to April. Reaching the river is risky during the monsoon season as the river overflows. Boat rides through the river are a popular tourist attraction. Discover India awarded Mawlynnong, also known as “God’s Own Garden”, the title of ‘the cleanest village in Asia’ in 2008. Apart from the cleanliness, the village has also achieved a rare feat of a 100 per cent literacy rate.
