Thiruvananthapuram: The COVID-19 pandemic not only shattered the economy but the hopes of hundreds of thousands in various sectors all over the world. One such industry that was hard hit was tourism sector.

However, the Kerala tourism has initiated measures for its revival with lockdown 4.0 in place. Though lockdown norms are eased, it will take long for foreign or other state tourists to visit the state. Hence the industry is now targeting domestic visitors.

The tourism sector hopes that Malayalis will throng the tourism spots in Kerala by Onam holidays.

Loans with low interest rate

The government is considering low interest loans to tourism units and labourers through cooperative banks. A campaign in this regard will begin in July. The final decision on the package will be decided evaluating the COVID-19 situation in the state after two weeks.

For the revival of tourism industry, a joint effort by finance, tourism and local self-government departments is necessary. Certain concessions were given on the building tax of tourism unit buildings after discussion with AC Moideen, the Minister for Local Self Government.

The officials have calibrated an irreplaceable loss to the industry caused by the pandemic. 12 to 18 months will be required for the revival. A loss of Rs 35,000 crore is expected, said E M Najeeb, president of Confederation of Kerala Tourism. More than 15 lakh persons lost their jobs, he added.

Safe Kerala

The low COVID-19 mortality rate in Kerala and the reduction in number of contact cases will benefit tourism industry. This fact will be projected in the revival campaign.
