Idukki: Kanthalloor tourism fest in Idukki will begin on Tuesday bestowing radiant sights to the visitors. As many as 52 tourist destinations, megalithic sites, dolmens (‘Muniyara’) and waterfalls await travellers at Kanthalloor, where the authorities have set up ample cottages, wood houses, mud houses, tree houses and homestays at moderate price.
The fest offers the opportunity to purchase fresh vegetables, apples, strawberries, finger millet (ragi), spices, honey and products with GI tags, including Marayoor jaggery, and Kanthalloor-Vattavada garlic. The tourists can also visit the plantations of these products.
The visitors can relish a trip through sandalwood forest, off road safari, night safari, morning safari, camp fire, tribal dance, mega show of film actors, flower show and carnival at the Kanthalloor fest.
The fest will be held at the Bhramaram viewpoint and St Pius X English School ground till April 29. Minister Roshy Augustine will inaugurate the cultural meet at 5 pm on April 18, while deputy speaker Chittayam Gopakumar will inaugurate the commercial fest.
A valley of apples
Kanthalloor, a picturesque hamlet in Devikulam taluk is located between Munnar and Udumalpett in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The village, situated 1,525 metres above sea level, is famous for its apple farms, where the tourists are allowed to visit and pluck apples themselves. Here, the apples get ripened in the months of June, July and August, and hence travellers flock to Kanthalloor during this period. Common guava, pomegranates, strawberry, and garlic are also abundantly cultivated here.
The other tourist destinations in the locality include Anamudi Shola National Park, Munnar and Vattavada.
