Microsoft has introduced a new limitation for System Restore points in its latest Windows 11 update. According to Windows Latest, this change arrives through the KB5060842 patch.

“After installing the June 2025 Windows security update, Windows 11, version 24H2 will retain system restore points for up to 60 days. Restore points older than 60 days are not available,” the statement read.

This policy will also apply to all future builds of Windows 11 version 24H2.

What has changed?

Previously, System Restore points were generally expected to last for up to 90 days. However, in practice, this period varied considerably.

Some users reported their restore points remained for the full 90-day span. Others, however, found them disappearing within as little as 10 days. These inconsistencies were largely due to factors such as available disk space, system usage patterns, and others.

With the new 60-day cap, Microsoft hopes to establish more consistent behaviour in how long these recovery snapshots are retained.

Why system restore is still useful

System Restore remains a key Windows feature that allows users to revert their devices to a previous, stable configuration. This tool is especially useful during large driver updates, new Windows patches, or when installing apps that may not be trustworthy.

In many cases, System Restore is not enabled by default, and advanced users often recommend switching it on manually. It can provide an essential safeguard against issues like failed updates, boot problems, or malfunctioning drivers.
