Gaming giant Rockstar Games offered fans a fresh and exciting glimpse into the world of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Tuesday with the release of the game's second official trailer. This long-awaited reveal marks the first substantial look at GTA 6 in nearly a year and a half, reaffirming Rockstar's commitment to launching its sprawling, open-world crime epic in 2026.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to be the first entirely new installment in the mainline GTA series in over a decade, and expectations surrounding its release are incredibly high. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5, a monumental success, has sold over 200 million copies since its initial launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.
The sixth mainline entry in Rockstar's 27-year-old franchise will take players back to the iconic Vice City, situated within the fictional state of Leonida. This time, the narrative will center around dual protagonists: Jason and Lucia, as they navigate a treacherous path in pursuit of a better life.
Deeper Look at Jason and Lucia's World
The trailer opens with a further introduction to one of the brand-new protagonists, Jason, depicting him engaged in what appears to be menial labor within Vice City. The official game description teases the duo's predicament: "Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida--forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive."
The pursuit of a better life seemingly begins with Jason picking up Lucia from prison. The subsequent series of shots in the trailer leaves some ambiguity as to whether Jason and Lucia's criminal activities occurred before or after Lucia's incarceration, hinting at a potential immediate return to a life of crime for the reunited pair -- a familiar theme within the Grand Theft Auto universe.
The trailer then showcases Jason cruising through the vibrant streets, engaging in a small store robbery, and working out on a sun-drenched beach, all classic elements of the GTA experience.
High-Octane Escapades
Shortly after Jason's introduction, the trailer formally introduces the second protagonist, Lucia, as Jason arrives at the penitentiary to greet her upon her release. The trailer then explodes into a rapid-fire montage showcasing the various high-stakes escapades the duo become embroiled in. These include elaborate heists, lively bar-hopping, intense underground fighting, daring plane hijackings, and relentless pursuits by a determined police force.
Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto iterations set in a stylized 1980s version of Vice City, GTA 6 is firmly rooted in the modern day. However, in a nostalgic nod, the trailer features a distinctly 1980s musical backdrop.
Alongside the trailer release, the official Grand Theft Auto 6 website received a comprehensive update, now brimming with official screenshots, further story details, and additional information about the highly anticipated game.
Rockstar Games has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The game was initially slated for a Fall 2025 release, but Rockstar stated that the development team requires additional time to fully realize their ambitious vision for the game.
