As the sun casts its first light over the coastal town of Vadakara, there's a palpable buzz that transcends the usual morning calm. The town, known for its historical significance and vibrant culture, is on the cusp of an electoral decision that could chart its course for the coming years. With the election fever moving up, the mood among the populace is a blend of hope, scepticism, and a yearning for change.
In the heart of Vadakara, conversations over steaming cups of chaya and kaapi reveal the people's pulse. Many locals believe that Congress's decision to bring Shafi Parambil has brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm. 'His entry was something that had never been seen before. I was present that day, and it was something really remarkable. He is constantly meeting and approaching everyone without any hesitation and makes his presence felt in the area. He's young, dynamic, and carries the aspirations of our youth,' says a local shop owner, reflecting a sentiment that resonates with a large section of the voters.

At the same time, K K Shailaja, the left candidate, has also marked her presence in the constituency in a big way. There's a strong current of support for the former health minister affectionately known as 'Shailaja Teacher.' Her tenure as the health minister won her accolades and trust, which she now brings to the electoral battle in Vadakara. 'She proved herself time and time again during the tough times of the Nipah virus and COVID-19 pandemic. Also, in the previous election, there was this feeling that Congress might win the elections and Rahul Gandhi could become the next PM; hence the people preferred the Congress to the CPM. But now people have understood that it won't happen. The tables have turned, and we will vote for Shailaja teacher,' opines a lottery shop owner.

Amidst these discussions, Praful Krishnan of the BJP is often mentioned as a contender who might sway some votes but is perceived as unlikely to clinch the seat. 'His vote share will increase, but it is highly unlikely that he will win the election due to strong competition,' comments a hotel owner, highlighting the intricate political landscape that Krishnan faces.

However, not everyone is carried away by the election fever. A section of the populace maintains a stoic detachment, grounded in the belief that irrespective of the victor, their daily toil remains unchanged. 'Elections come and go, but our lives move on the same. We have to struggle every day to put food on the table, and it doesn't matter who wins or loses,' says a daily wager.
A particularly striking perspective comes from a Vadakara native who argues that both leading candidates, despite their merits, are outsiders. 'Vadakara needs its own voice in the parliament, someone who truly understands our land and our people.'
As the battle heats up, the air in Vadakara is thick with anticipation. Will Shafi Parambil's youthful vigour triumph, or will Shailaja Teacher's seasoned wisdom resonate more with the voters? Or perhaps, will Praful Krishnan's campaign manage to surprise the naysayers? The answers lie in the hands of Vadakara's citizens, who, in the sanctity of the polling booth, will choose their representative.
