Karassery: A team of experts from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune visited Kodiyathur region in Kozhikode to curb the potential spread of Nipah virus in Kozhikode. The visit was to implement precautionary measures and assess the situation pertaining to bat colonies in the area.They also collected information from the locals.
In 2021, a 13-year-old boy had died after contracting Nipah virus in Pazhoor near Kodiyathur. Following this, inspections are carried out in the region during the months of June and July every year. The aim is to identify bats, which are carriers of the virus, and prevent the spread of the disease.
The expert team comprising scientists Dr Arun and Dr Ullas of NIV carried out the inspection. It is learnt that one more team from the institute will soon arrive in the district to trap bats and collect their samples.
