​​​​​​Kollam:As the temperature rises steadily the health department has warned about possible health problems including sunburn and heat strokes.

It is directed to frequently drink water even if you’re not thirsty due to the risk of dehydration. It is also advised not to ignore symptoms of heat related health issues. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience very high body temperature, dry, hot, red skin, severe headache, dizziness, slow pulse and changes in mental state due to sunburn.     

  • Avoid popping blisters on the affected area caused by perspiration.
  • Drink plenty of salted rice water, lemon juice, fresh tender coconut water, Oral rehydration solutions(ORS) etc., Seek care at the closest hospital if the symptoms persist even after resting. 
  • Children should not be exposed to too much sun as they're likely to get intensive itchy heat rashes and blisters due to excessive sweating. Keep the parts affected by rashes or blisters dry. 
  • While travelling, always carry an umbrella to protect yourself from heat and water to prevent hydration.
  • Drink lukewarm water.
  • Wear loose-fitting, white or light-colored clothing.
  • Avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm. 
  • The elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with serious illnesses should take extra precautions. 
  • Working in the sun for long periods of time can cause sunburn, redness, pain and burns on the parts of the body that are directly exposed to the sun.
  • Keep the doors and windows of the house open. If you feel fatigued or affected by sunburns, move to a shaded area and rest well. 
  • Do not leave children to play out or in vehicles parked in the sun for a long period of time. 
  • Those who drink juice from roadsides and shops should ensure that the ice used is made with fresh water. 
  • It should also be ensured that the ice used in celebrations is made from pure water.
  • Wash your face frequently with water and cool your body. 
  • Include more fruits and salads in your diet during hot weather and keep yourself hydrated.

Symptoms of heat stroke include weakness, fatigue, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, unusual sweating, extreme thirst, dark urine or low urine output, and fainting.
