Edavanna (Malappuram): Similar to the chit fund schemes, a 'book chit scheme' also has been introduced here. The investors will get their favourite books instead of the amount they deposit. A KSRTC employee who lost job during the Covid times launched the new scheme that encourages reading habit along with the efforts to make the ends meet.

People can pay money to the home library scheme through digital payment methods. Those who did not get the chit during draws will be delivered books when the scheme expires. Wayanad Sultan Bathery native T Riyas ideated the books chit scheme. He implemented it in last November.

First Riyas included his relatives in the scheme. Later, more members were added and now there are 14 groups in different districts. Each group is named after noted literary works. The chit schemes worth Rs 500 and Rs 1000 are available. Those who pay Rs 500 will get books worth Rs 550 and those who pay Rs 1000 will get books worth Rs 10,100.

The winners will be handed over the books by writers or other eminent personalities in cultural or social sectors. If the place is very far away, books will be sent via courier. Currently, people from Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Thrissur and Idukki districts have joined the scheme.

Riyas' brother and writer Haris Nenmeni suggested him to start a book chit. An avid reader, Riyas loved the idea and implemented it. Retired DEO P Sharafunnisa was the first winner. Different publishing houses including Mathrubhumi Books also cooperate with the venture. They also organise some event and contests for the members of the groups.
