Idukki: The wild elephant roaming in Suryanelli region has become a headache for the farmers who are reeling under the Covid crisis. The elephant is wreaking havoc in the farm lands and ruined their livelihood.
The elephant, which visits the residential areas and farms day and night, pose a threat to the lives of people. Many crops, including ripe cardamom, are destroyed by the jumbo. With wild elephants roaming around, the people are worried to sleep peacefully at night.
Workers are afraid to come to the cardamom plantations for harvesting and other farm works. The concerned officials are not initiating any action to drive away the wild elephants, which frequently visits the human settlements.
The authorities are not bothered to build effective electric fences and dig trenches to separate the forest and farms. The farmers also have been requesting the same for quite some time.
In various areas including Mankulam in Idukki, trenches have been dug and electric fences have been erected to protect farm from wild animals.
