As many as 27 superior breed cows, including calves and a buffalo, are part of a farm run by Alan, an 18-year-old college student from Idukki. The college student from Karimannoor panchayat in Thodupuzha distributes over 200 litres of milk to Milma society a day.
Alan likes taking care of the cows at his home from a very young age and he always wanted to start a farm. The youngest son of Karakunnel Sabu and Mini is a first year BCA student at Mar Augusthinose College in Ramapuram.
Sabu built a farm for the teenager five years ago when he was a 13-year-old. Alan was happy to follow his father's direction and was ready to take care of the farm all by himself. He was able to balance his studies and farming.
The 18-year-old's day starts at 4:30 in the morning bathing the cattle and milking them. Alan gets help from his family to clean up the farm. He transports milk to the Milma society by jeep and later goes to college from there.
The first thing that he does once he comes back from college is to get grass for feeding the cattle. Alan starts studying after this and also tries to find time for his friends between work and studies.
Alan was able to expand his farm from the profit that he made from the business. The farm now has cattle from different breeds including Sindhi, HF, Brown and HF Jersey cross.
Alan has two siblings, Paul and Sony.
