Wayanad: Sunflower which is largely cultivated in Karnataka has gained huge demand in Wayanad too. A huge number of sunflowers can be seen in full bloom at the field of Mathoorkulangara Sunil in Cheeral.
As sunflower farming became successful, more farmers in Cheeral have started experimenting with this flower. Though sunflower farming is not popular in Wayanad, more farmers are coming forward to cultivate it here for some years.
This time, Sunil has cultivated Sunflower in his one-acre land. Interestingly, the sunflowers bloomed even though climate change affected its growth.
“Shortage of rainfall at frequent intervals affected the harvest. As lockdown is imposed again, the sale of sunflower also will be a challenge,” said Sunil.
As there is no facility for sunflower processing in Wayanad, the farmers were depending on Karnataka for it. The sunflower farmers are hoping to get more profit once the lockdown crisis is over.
