Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai and Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR), have invited applications for admission to the Vigyan Vidushi (VV 2022) three-week summer school in Physics for women students.
The programme will provide students an exposure to advanced topics in Physics and research opportunities, and encourage them to take up research in Physics as a career option. The students will also get an opportunity to be taught, inspired, and mentored by successful women scientist role models.
Eligibility: Applicants should be women students in the first year of their two-year M.Sc. Course in Physics or in the fourth year of their Integrated B.Sc-M.Sc. Course in Physics.
The programme will have two parts. The first part, an online component to be held during the period from 5 July to 16 July, 2022, will have three courses, which will typically consist of lectures in the morning and tutorials in the afternoon. This will be followed by an on-site component (at HBCSE/TIFR, Mumbai) to be held from 22 July - 1 August. The highlight of the on-site component will be a course on experimental physics, where students will be exposed to advanced experimental techniques and encouraged to perform innovative experiments. There will be opportunities for visits to research laboratories at TIFR, Colaba. In addition, there will be interactive sessions on computational techniques and problem-solving.
Selected students are expected to participate in both, online and on-site components of the programme.
In addition to the regular courses, the VV programme will have unique features such as Special lectures by women scientists; Ample opportunities for interacting (online and in-person) with subject experts including many women scientists; Special mentoring sessions dealing with gender-related issues, generally in the evenings; Exposure to Physics Education Research.
For the on-site component, lectures and experimental sessions will be at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai. All participants will be reimbursed travel expenses (AC 3-tier train or road travel as per norms). Accommodation and meals will be provided at the HBCSE campus for the duration of the on-site component.
Application: Application can be submitted at https://vv.hbcse.tifr.res.in/ latest by 5th May, 2022. Name, Designation, Institute, Email ID and Contact number of 2 referees who would be filling Confidential Assessment Form for the applicant will have to be provided. It is preferable to choose referees with whom applicants have had academic interaction in recent times. Softcopies of all mark sheets for B.Sc./Int. MSc. so far as a single PDF (.pdf file of size not exceeding 15 MB) has to be uploaded.
Selection: About 40 women students will be selected from nationwide applications. The selection will be based on the academic profile of the applicant, recommendations of two referees and a 200-word write-up on the applicant’s interest in Physics. An attempt will be made to ensure a wide distribution across educational institutions in different parts of the country.
