Ottapalam: The Kerala education department has instructed schools in the state to set up special facilities for students suffering from Type 1 diabetes. Children suffering from Type 1 diabetes will require life-long insulin replacement.
The teachers were asked to set up a clean space for administering insulin injections, they were also asked to assign a place for diabetic students to have light food in the noons and evenings as per the prescriptions. Similarly, during examination, diabetic students shall be provided with timely medicines, light food, and drinking water at the examination halls. In addition to this, availability of glucometers and glucose testing strips also have to be ensured at these halls. The students will be given special consideration and will be allowed to avail these facilities if required and to have food in their prescribed time as well.
In case of a medical emergency, students shall be immediately shifted to a health centre and their parents shall be informed immediately.
