Alappuzha: The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has issued guidelines on what values catholic educational institutions should uphold in the changing times. The guidelines were prepared by the education and culture office of CBCI in order to manage the challenges posed by the present socio-political situation in the country.
It has been suggested that children should recite the Preamble of the constitution during the daily assembly. It should also be inscribed on the main entrance of the institution.
Lately, some untoward incidents have been reported from a few schools in north India. Inspections by authorities to examine permits, building and property details have also gone up. An organisation even suggested that priests and nuns in a school in Assam should not attend school wearing their religious attires. It is in this context that CBCI has issued some guidelines.
Other important suggestions
- The vision and values of the school should be based on catholic principles. All religious beliefs should be respected. There should be no discrimination.
- Do not impose christian religious traditions on students belonging to other faiths.
- School policies must be inclusive.
- Teachers should also come from varied backgrounds to promote diversity.
- Schools should have a proper enclosure and surveillance cameras must be installed.
- Pictures of prominent freedom fighters, scientists, poets, national leaders, etc should be displayed in the school lobby, library and corridors.
- All records related to school land and building should be maintained.
