The book also explores ancient astronomical practices and the use of alloys in medicine, fostering curiosity and critical thinking

New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a new Class 8 Science textbook titled Curiosity, which integrates traditional Indian scientific knowledge with modern discoveries and innovations.
From the atomic theories of ancient philosopher Acharya Kanad to the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) latest missions, the book seeks to connect India’s scientific heritage with contemporary developments.
Emphasis on curiosity and values
“This integration of traditional knowledge with modern scientific education is intended to develop curiosity, environmental awareness, ethical values and critical thinking,” the foreword of the book states, underlining the textbook’s broader educational objectives.
From variolation to vaccines
A section titled Our Scientific Heritage in the chapter Health: The Ultimate Treasure highlights how India had developed traditional methods to combat diseases long before the emergence of modern medicine.
“Long before modern vaccines, India had a traditional method called variolation to protect against smallpox,” the book notes, referencing a practice that predates Edward Jenner’s groundbreaking work on vaccination.
The chapter also includes an Ever Heard Of? feature, drawing attention to India's significant contribution during the recent global health crisis.
“Indian vaccine companies played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to support the global health efforts,” it states, drawing a connection between ancient and contemporary public health initiatives.
Ancient concepts of matter
In the chapter Particulate Nature of Matter, the book introduces students to the early philosophical notions of atomic theory in India.
“Acharya Kanad, an ancient Indian philosopher, first spoke about the idea of a Parmanu (atom),” the book mentions, crediting indigenous thought as the precursor to modern scientific ideas.
Similarly, the chapter Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures refers to the use of metals and alloys in ancient Indian texts, particularly their applications for medicinal purposes.
ISRO's achievements featured
The textbook gives ample space to India's modern space achievements, spotlighting ISRO's milestone missions. It includes references to Chandrayaan 1, 2 and 3 for lunar exploration, Aditya L1 for solar observation, and Mangalyaan for the Mars mission.
Astronomy in Ancient India
In Light: Mirrors and Lenses, the textbook highlights India’s long-standing astronomical traditions. “Over 800 years ago, during Bhaskara II's time, Indian astronomers used shallow water bowls and angled tubes to observe and measure the positions of stars and planets in the sky,” it states. This practice suggests a historical understanding of the laws of reflection, even if such principles were not formally documented in scientific literature at the time.
New content in English textbooks
Apart from science, the NCERT has also updated English textbooks across other classes with rich historical and social narratives.
Class 8 students will now learn about Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, and the historic Battle of Budgam.
In Santoor, the Class 5 English textbook, students are prompted to think about future careers. The Let Us Explore section presents illustrations of diverse vocations, featuring a woman pilot and photographer alongside a male chef and florist, encouraging gender-neutral aspirations.
Promoting gender representation and environmental awareness
A chapter titled Panchayat introduces students to local governance and highlights the impact of women leaders. The book notes that “the 33 percent reservation in the local bodies implemented by a few state governments has ensured a strong presence of women in this decision-making body in villages.”
Environmental responsibility also features prominently in the updated content, with lessons on the importance of water conservation. The learning experience is made more engaging through culturally rooted games like Gilli Danda and national sports such as hockey.
