Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Higher Education Minister Roji M. John has stated that the Indira Guarantee scheme announced for college girl students in the state will be implemented within the current academic year (2026-27). He added that preliminary steps for the scheme, which provides ₹1,000 per month to eligible girl students, have already been initiated under the leadership of the Higher Education Department.

The Minister reiterated that the government remains committed to implementing all five guarantees announced during the election. As part of this commitment, a financial assistance scheme for girl students under the Higher Education Department is being introduced.

He also acknowledged shortcomings in the implementation of the four-year degree programme in the state. The Minister noted that allegations have been raised that the scheme was rolled out without adequate preparation, resulting in difficulties for universities, teachers, and students.

In light of these concerns, he said a special committee will be constituted to examine the four-year degree programme. The government intends to consider the committee’s recommendations and make necessary revisions to the course structure.
