New Delhi: A central government survey has found that private coaching and tuition centres are now widespread in Kerala. The study by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) found that 27.5% of students from pre-primary to higher secondary levels in the state attend private tuition.

The survey highlights a sharp rise in dependence on coaching at the secondary stage, with more than half of Class 10 students taking tuition. At the higher secondary level, 41.6% of students receive private coaching.

While only 27.5% of middle school (Classes 6–8) students in Kerala attend tuition, the figure doubles to 54.2% at the secondary stage, when students prepare for board examinations. Urban students (57.6%) were found to rely more on coaching than their rural counterparts (50.3%) at this level.

In contrast, at the higher secondary stage, rural students (45.5%) take more private coaching than those in urban areas (38.1%). The survey also noted that 3.7% of children in pre-primary classes in Kerala are enrolled in private tuition.
