Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of controversy and protests, the school curriculum in Kerala has seen changes, with the removal of 'gender equality' and the adoption of 'gender justice' in the approved 'draft framework'. The curriculum core committee made this decision on Friday.

Previously, religious organisations, including Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, had raised objections to the inclusion of 'gender equality' in the curriculum. The amended draft framework now proposes that students should be given opportunities to understand the division of labour based on gender, the availability of clothing, leisure, and entertainment, among other aspects. The soft approach in the amended framework aims to resolve the high level of controversy and protests surrounding the topic of gender equality.

The revised framework advocates embracing diverse gender identities and fostering a co-educational approach. A gender audit will be conducted in the syllabus, books, and study materials to ensure inclusivity and representation.

Teachers are encouraged to create common spaces without gender segregation, promoting an inclusive and respectful environment. Additionally, the draft framework emphasises the integration of a gender perspective while teaching all subjects.
