Thiruvananthapuram: The government is all set to fully implement the high school- higher secondary integration recommended in the Khader Committee report. The existing separation between the two sections will no longer be prevalent. Instead, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP), classes 9 to 12 will now be integratedly called the secondary level.
The report of the core committee regarding the Khader Committee report and the draft of the special norm were handed over to Minister V. Sivankutty.
Presently, the eight standard is part of high school education in Kerala. When the consolidation comes into effect, eight standard will not be divided at once but rather, implementation will be brought about in a manner that does not affect the functioning of the school and the service of the teachers.
In future, the recruitment of teachers will be carried out by converting secondary as a special cadre. Reports say that the core committee report has recommended seniority promotion to the present higher secondary junior teachers if they volunteer to teach in classes 9 and 10. However, this is not mandatory.
With this consolidation and the coming of the secondary cadre, there may be no senior post in the future. Education department officials say that the government will implement reforms in teacher courses and training.
Meanwhile, the core committee recommendation is yet to be made public by the government. The draft regulations suggesting the changes in service conditions have not been forwarded to teachers unions for discussion. The government is also yet to publish the second part of the Khader committee report that recommended changes in school timings. It has also not specified when these changes will be implemented.
