Pranjal Srivastava of Bengaluru scored a hat-trick of gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad with his third medal in the 2022 edition held in Oslo, Norway from July 6-16, 2022.

The Indian team bagged one gold and five bronze medals in Oslo.

Pranjal is the first Indian to win 3 gold medals at the IMO. In his debut year, 2018, at the age of 14, he won a silver medal and went on to win gold medals in 2019, 2021 and 2022. In 2020 India could not participate in the IMO due to the pandemic. He has also won 2 gold medals (2019, 2022) in the Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad.

The team total is 165 out of a maximum score of 252 and its rank is 24 out of 104 countries. In all, 589 contestants (521 males, 68 females) participated in IMO 2022.

The Indian team was led by Prof. Niranjan Balachandran (Dept. of Mathematics, IITB), Prof. Shanta Laishram (Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi), and former IMO participants Sutanay Bhattacharya and Spandan Ghosh.

The team will return to Mumbai on Sunday. A reception will be arranged to felicitate the team at 12.00 noon.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students and is held annually in different countries. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania.
