Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, a premier institute dedicated to intense multi-disciplinary research, supporting the nuclear energy programme of India, has invited applications for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) at the Centre in the areas of Physical, Chemical and Life Sciences.

The selected candidates will register for a Ph.D. in Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed to be University of the Department of Atomic Energy.

Areas of research projects are given in the Notification at https://recruit.barc.gov.in. The Centre also encourages high-quality inter-disciplinary research in areas relevant to its programmes.

The number of Fellowships available is 105 (Indicative)

Eligibility: The Applicant should be an Indian National holding M.Sc./Integrated M.Sc./ Four Years B.S. with the following Main subjects and Additional Requirements for each.

Physics: Mathematics must be one of the subjects at the B.Sc. level. Those with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS (4 years) with specialisations in Electronics and Instrumentation are not eligible to apply.

Chemistry (General/ Applied/ Organic/ Inorganic/ Physical/ Analytical): Physics should be an ancillary subject at B.Sc. Level and Mathematics at H.Sc. level. Those who have not scored passing marks in Physics at B.Sc level and/or in Mathematics at H.Sc. level are not eligible to apply. Those with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS (4 years) in Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and M. Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Analysis are not eligible

Life Sciences (Life Science/Botany/ Zoology/ Agriculture/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Molecular Biology/ Biotechnology/ Marine Biology/ Bioinformatics/ Genetics/ Plant Science/ Plant Breeding/ Plant Pathology/ Entomology/ Animal Science/ Biomedical Sciences/ Biosciences/ Food Science/ Food Science and Technology): Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Agriculture Chemistry or any other allied Chemistry must be one of the subjects at B.Sc. / five-year integrated M.Sc. level. Those with M.Sc. /Integrated M.Sc / BS (4 years) in Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Polymer Science, Medicine/Medical Science, Pharmaceutical Science and Home Science and those with B.Tech./M.Tech. degree in any of the Life Sciences disciplines are not eligible to apply.

Mark requirement: Applicants should have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognised University. Those with five years integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Single degree) should have secured a minimum of 55% aggregate. Those with a 4-year / 8-semester Bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate.

Age limit: The applicant should be less than 28 years of age as on 01-08-2025. Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years in case of OBC-NCL, 5 years for SC & ST and 10 years for Pwbd candidates.

National level examination: Applicants should have successfully cleared and have a valid certificate for at least one of the following national-level examinations. (i) UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship (SLET/ Lectureship not eligible) (ii) JEST Score (iii) ICMR-JRF Test, ICAR-JRF Test (iv) DBT-JRB Biotechnology Eligibility Test (v) GATE Score in Physics/ Chemistry /Life Sciences/ Biotechnology (vi) JGEEBILS. Applicants should indicate the details of the qualifying examinations, and it should be valid as of 01.08.2025. The candidate should submit the proof at the time of the interview.

Selection: Applicants will be shortlisted for interview based on their valid score on 01.08.2025 obtained in the national qualifying exam, as notified and/or academic performance. Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interview.

Fellowship: Rs. 37,000/- per month for a period of two years for JRF and Rs. 42,000/- per month for Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year on satisfactory performance. Annual contingency grant of Rs. 60,000/-. Medical benefits under CHSS are also available for JRF candidates (research scholar only). The total duration of the fellowship is five years. Stay in the provided hostel and payment of mess charges are mandatory during the PhD programme.
