Amazon.com Inc on Tuesday confirmed plans to cut nearly 14,000 corporate jobs, just months after Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy signalled that the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) would lead to a smaller workforce.

In June, Jassy had hinted that the e-commerce giant’s headcount would likely decline as AI systems increasingly take over tasks traditionally handled by human employees.

“The reductions we're sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we're investing in our biggest bets,” said Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, in a blog post on Tuesday.

Earlier reports indicated that Amazon’s layoffs could impact around 30,000 corporate employees across multiple divisions, with notifications expected to begin Tuesday morning (US time), according to Reuters.

The company, which employs more than 1.54 million people globally, including warehouse staff, has already eliminated over 27,000 jobs since 2022 through smaller rounds of cuts affecting its cloud, devices, communications, and retail units.

The latest move is part of CEO Andy Jassy’s ongoing multi-year cost-cutting initiative aimed at “removing layers and flattening organisations” to make Amazon more agile.

Beth Galetti said the restructuring involves both workforce reductions and new hiring in select areas.

“While this will include reducing in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles,” Galetti said.

She added that Amazon is making efforts to support affected employees through internal placements and transition benefits.

“We’re working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted, including offering most employees 90 days to look for a new role internally (the timing will vary some based on local laws), and our recruiting teams will prioritise internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles within Amazon. For our teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll offer them transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits, and more.”

Galetti also stated that Amazon will continue hiring in key strategic areas while enhancing efficiency and streamlining its structure.

“Looking ahead to 2026, as Andy talked about earlier this year, we expect to continue hiring in key strategic areas while also finding additional places we can remove layers, increase ownership, and realise efficiency gains.”
