Saudi crown prince raises concerns to Trump over Iran escalation: Reports

Washington: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has expressed concern to US President Donald Trump over the possibility of Washington escalating its military campaign against Iran, amid fears that a wider conflict could threaten energy infrastructure across the Gulf.

According to a person familiar with the conversation, the Saudi crown prince raised the issue during a phone call with Trump on Saturday as the US president weighs further military action against Iran. The call was first reported by Axios.

During the discussion, Mohammed bin Salman reportedly sought clarity on the potential next steps the US was considering against Tehran.

Saudi officials are said to be worried that if the US targets Iran's energy facilities or launches large-scale strikes on other critical infrastructure, Tehran could retaliate by attacking energy installations in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

The White House did not immediately comment on the reported conversation.

The phone call comes days after Saudi Arabia joined the United States in striking logistics and weapons sites used by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Despite its participation in those operations, Riyadh has continued to advocate for renewed negotiations between Washington and Tehran to bring an end to the five-month-long conflict.

In a parallel diplomatic effort, Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman travelled to Washington earlier this week, where he held separate meetings with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance to discuss strategy on Iran.
