Kerala on high alert: Orange and yellow alert in several districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Kerala, forecasting intensified rainfall across the state. An orange alert has been declared for Palakkad and Malappuram districts, with predictions of heavy rain in isolated areas. A yellow alert is also in effect for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts.

Rain is expected to persist across the state until August 15. The IMD also forecasts strong winds with speeds of 30-40 km/h, potentially reaching up to 50 km/h.

An orange alert remains in effect for Palakkad and Malappuram, with the IMD predicting extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 201.4 mm on August 11 and 13. The alert will also be in place for Idukki, Ernakulam, and Malappuram on August 14.

Residents in landslide, landslip, and waterlogging-prone areas are advised to relocate to safer locations as a precaution.

  • August 14: Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Wayanad
  • August 15: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur
     

Alerts for Fishermen

The IMD has advised against fishing along the South Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts from August 11 to 15 , due to expected gusty winds of 35 to 45 km/h, with occasional gusts up to 55 km/h, and adverse weather conditions. No fishing restrictions are in place for the Karnataka coasts during this period.
