Heavy rains: Yellow alert for 8 Kerala districts; school, college holiday subject to local weather
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala on Monday, July 20, as isolated heavy rain is expected in parts of the state.
The forecast places Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod under a yellow alert. According to the IMD, these districts are likely to witness isolated heavy rain, defined as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
The heavy showers are expected to remain localised, mainly affecting parts of central and northern Kerala rather than the entire state.
The rest of the state, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki, is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, ranging between 2.5 mm and 64.4 mm. Similar weather conditions have also been forecast for Lakshadweep.
The IMD has described the forecast as "very likely", indicating a high probability of the expected weather conditions.
Rainfall expected to ease from Tuesday
Weather conditions are expected to improve from Tuesday, July 21. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain across all 14 districts of Kerala from Tuesday to Friday, July 24.
No heavy rain alerts have been issued for the remainder of the week. Districts across the state, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Kasaragode, are expected to receive light to moderate showers during this period. Lakshadweep is also likely to experience similar weather.
The IMD may revise its forecast if weather conditions change.

No school or college holiday announced
No rain-related holiday has been announced for schools or colleges on Tuesday, July 21, or the following days.
